Method for operation of a direct injection combustion engine, whereby the engine is operated in a lean mode with homogeneous character. Accordingly a constant lambda value is striven for, with the lambda value effectively maintained between upper and lower threshold values. In certain operating conditions the threshold values can be widened. The invention also relates to a corresponding controlling computer program, a control device for operation of a direct injection combustion engine and a direct fuel injection combustion engine.
