Process for operating a direct-injection I.C. engine, especially a direct-injection Otto engine, involves feeding a predetermined exhaust gas amount from the exhaust gas back into the intake air. During operation of the engine with a high load and revolutions in the homogeneous lean operation, a predetermined exhaust gas amount is feed back from the exhaust gas, cooled and fed to a NOx storage catalyst.
