The bonnet covers an airbag (5) which has associated gas generator (2). A device for mechanically releasing the connection between the bonnet and vehicle body is mounted underneath the bonnet and is released through the activation of the gas generator before the or each airbag is filled with gas. The release mechanism can be a Bowden cable (6) running in the transverse direction of the vehicle and mechanically connected to the gas generator. A locking bolt (9) at each end of the Bowden cable moves from a locking position when the bonnet is displaced so that the connection between bonnet and vehicle body is released.
