The method of operating a motor vehicle internal combustion engine involves producing a rotational speed model of the engine in dependence on the position of the accelerator pedal and-or other vehicle parameters. The speed range is determined and the ignition dwell angle and-or cylinder charging is regulated to maintain the speed range. An Independent claim is included for an engine regulation circuit using the above method.
