The fuel injection system has a fuel tank (14), at least one fuel pump (16,22) and a fuel collection line (26) for the fuel injectors (28), supplied by the fuel pump. The pressure within the fuel collection line is controlled via a valve device (38) which remains closed upon normal pressure within the fuel collection line. Also included are Independent claims for the following:- (a) an engine for an automobile provided with a direct fuel injection system; (b) an operating method for an engine with a direct fuel injection system.
