The fuel injection system has a low pressure fuel pump (20) coupled to the fuel tank (16). There is a high pressure fuel pump (40) supplying at least one fuel injection device (52). A non-return valve (26) is incorporated in the fuel line (24) between the low pressure and high pressure fuel pumps, with a leakage line (64) between the high pressure fuel pump and the fuel tank containing a hydraulically-operated blocking valve (66), controlled by the pressure in the latter fuel line in front of the non-return valve. An Independent claim for an engine for an automobile provided with a fuel injection system is also included.
