2.1. Known triggering methods ensure safe deployment of the occupant protection system in the event of a crash with a low trigger threshold; however, the risk of false triggering increases when, for example, curbs, road undulations, potholes or similar obstacles are driven over. 2.2. A method for triggering an occupant protection system in vehicles, in which a release signal originating from sensors for the triggering of the occupant protection system is generated and compared with a threshold value used as a triggering criterion, characterized in that the threshold value is continuously changed and adapted as a function of the acceleration in the direction of the vertical axis of the vehicle. 2.3. The invention is particularly suitable for an algorithm for triggering an occupant protection system in vehicles in order to prevent false triggering when driving over curbs, road undulations, potholes or obstacles on the roadway.
