The method uses sensors (6) to detect obstructions and a computer (4) to control the brake system (1). The automatic brake regulation circuit is deactivated or suspended by operation of the brakes by the driver. It involves an assisted braking phase during which the vehicle deceleration is controlled by the computer, following a preset time value as a function of the distance and the relative speeds of the vehicle and obstacle.
