The invention relates to a method for controlling a compressor (14) of a refrigerant circuit (10) of an air conditioning system of a motor vehicle, in which the instantaneous load torque is determined and compared with a maximum limit torque specified by an engine control unit, and the compressor is actuated as a function of a comparison value resulting therefrom. In order to avoid complete shutdown of the compressor, it is proposed that the instantaneous load torque is represented as a function of variables, such as compressor speed and refrigerant high pressure, and on the basis of an inverse function belonging to this function, depending on the maximum limit torque specified by the engine control unit, a control signal for the compressor, for example a setpoint value of the refrigerant high pressure, is determined.
