The head rest for a car seat comprises a fixed rear housing (2) and a movable front cover which are connected by upper (4) and lower (5) levers, allowing the cover to move from a normal position to a protecting position in which it is higher and further forward. The levers are parallel to each other and the cover is biased by a spring (16), one end of which is attached to the rear housing while the other is directly or indirectly connected to the levers.
