Vehicle steering device for a motor vehicle fitted with an airbag module

The cover(9) over the airbag deployment opening in the steering wheel hub is connected to at least one cable(18) operated by a pyrotechnic drive(14) in the form of a cylinder and piston unit. The gas generator(11) forms the piston and is movable in the cylindrical portion(15) of the steering wheel hub and/or steering column(2) from a neutral position into a ready position. With displacement of the gas generator in the cylindrical section the pull cable acts upon the cover to open it and free the airbag deployment opening.
