The invention relates to a navigation system for a motor vehicle and a method for operating such a navigation system, in which position data regarding the current vehicle position, which has been determined by a current position detection device with the aid of map data, is combined with image data from a pattern recognition device, evaluated, and made available to the vehicle user. In this way, the information security for the motor vehicle user is significantly increased, in particular by exploiting redundant information.
