The carriage (80) has a steering device and a magnetic head (81), which is rotated about a vertical axis (VA) relative to the carriage via magnetic coupling with a guide rail (84). The magnetic head can be displaced vertically relative to the carriage for maintaining a constant distance from the guide rail sufficient to allow the magnetic head to follow the latter, with corresponding operation of the steering device. An Independent claim for an autonomous carriage system is also included.
