In the garden

I used to log regular updates on my gardening activities but haven't done one in 15 years or more. There is no doubt that bike riding has deeply cut in to my gardening time. But, hey its Spring and I have been inspired to get out and play in the dirt. It started when I saw a 6'x8' greenhouse on sale at Bi-Mart. I couldn't resist. We have trouble getting a good crop of tomatoes here so maybe a greenhouse will help. It just so happens one of our plots at the community garden is exactly 6'x8' and the thing fits perfectly. So now I've got that bed worked up and added a bunch of compost. I planted some lettuce starts hoping to get some early lettuce before I need the space for tomatoes and peppers.

I also worked up a couple of small beds on the south side of our house that gets enough sun to grow lettuce and kale. But I haven't planted anything yet until I figure out how to deer-proof them, while still allowing easy access to weed and harvest. I really want one of them to be a permanent cold frame but have not figured out a good design yet.

My berries need attention as always. The blueberries put on a ton of growth last year and are going to be difficult to harvest this year. The marionberries need some of the canes tied up and some dead ones cut out. And of course the strawberries need weeding. Maybe tomorrow.
