How Scotland’s Hungarian community voted in key election At the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh, Scotland’s 7-10,000-strong Hungarian population gathered to vote. The atmosphere was lively as hundreds of people queued at the city centre building, every citizen who had not sent a mail ballot being required to travel to the capital to take part. The demographics ranged from young university students to parents with their toddlers and older citizens, the large crowd not deterred by the weather or the queue. There was lively discussion about the potential results and people waited patiently for their turn in what is set to be the most consequential Hungarian election since the Cold War. Coming out of the building, the conversation was even louder as groups and families waited for each other excitedly. Among those casting their votes in Scotland, many of them young and pro-European, there was a clear desire to see the end of Mr Orbán’s reign. Zsombor Kerekes told The Herald: “I would like to live in a free and independent Hungary and I don’t think that’s too much to ask for. I would like to belong to a country that accepts the LGBTQ+ community and is economically strong.“
