Hi there! New train person here 🙂 This might seem like a silly question, but who is Mr Beeching? I feel like you’ve mentioned him a few times and I’m very intrigued. Thanks!

Beeching is the person who was tasked with cutting costs at british rail in the 60s. His report suggested closing about a third of the stations in britain at the time. A lot of these closures were short sighted and most "new" railways opening in britain are reopening lines that were closed under him. While he is the face of these closures, I think then transport minister Ernest Marples should be under a lot more scrutiny. He directly appointed Beeching for this job and simultaneously just happened to own a road building company. Some wikipedia links below.
