The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia will mark Friday, March 20, 2026, as the first day of Eid al-Fitr, ending the month of Ramadan, officials said. The UAE Presidential Court said Thursday, March 19, would be the final day of Ramadan after the Shawwal crescent was not sighted on Wednesday. The decision followed reports and moon-sighting results across the country, according to a statement carried by WAM, the UAE state news agency. The Presidential Court extended congratulations to UAE leaders, including President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan; Vice President and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum; members of the Supreme Council and rulers of the Emirates; and the people of the UAE. The statement also included prayers for blessings, prosperity, and wellbeing for the UAE and the wider world. In Saudi Arabia, the Supreme Court confirmed that Thursday would complete the 30th day of Ramadan, making Friday the start of Eid al-Fitr. The Saudi Press Agency reported the announcement, noting that the holiday’s timing is based on the lunar crescent moon. Fasting during Ramadan is one of Islam’s five pillars, requiring believers to abstain from food, drink, smoking, and sexual activity during daylight hours. Observant Muslims are also encouraged to give to the poor.
