Recent False Suspensions of Paid Users May Be Connected to the Codex Quota Anomalies

I would like to raise a concern that I believe deserves the attention of both the OpenAI team and the broader community.
Over the past few days, I have seen a significant number of users reporting that their ChatGPT accounts or subscriptions were suspended or deactivated unexpectedly. Many of these users believe they did not violate the Terms of Service.
I fully understand and support OpenAI’s efforts to combat abuse, fraud, account sharing, and other violations. Strong enforcement is necessary to protect the platform. However, if legitimate users are being caught by mistake, it can have serious consequences for both users and OpenAI itself.
The biggest concern is not only the individual account suspensions, but also the loss of trust that follows.
Many users are beginning to worry that even if they purchase subscriptions through official channels and follow the rules, their accounts could still be suspended without a clear explanation. This uncertainty discourages people from purchasing directly from OpenAI.
As a result, I have noticed more users discussing or considering grey-market subscription services, unofficial resellers, or shared accounts because they believe those options may expose them to less financial risk if something goes wrong. Whether that perception is accurate or not, the fact that users are thinking this way should be a concern.
This situation benefits nobody.
* Legitimate customers lose confidence in the official platform.
* OpenAI may lose paying subscribers.
* Grey-market businesses become more attractive.
* The relationship of trust between users and OpenAI becomes weaker.
In addition to my own experience, I have spent considerable time communicating with other affected users. So far, every case I have personally collected involves a paying customer, and the majority of these users were subscribed to higher-tier ChatGPT plans commonly referred to by users as the “20×” and “5×” plans. I have collected information from many affected users and established direct contact with them. Based on the cases I have gathered, this does not appear to be an isolated incident, as many users reported experiencing similar account actions during the same period.
One observation that I believe deserves further investigation is the possible connection between these account suspensions and the recent Codex quota anomalies.
Based on the timing of the cases I have collected, many of the affected users experienced account actions around the same period that users were reporting unusual Codex quota behavior. I cannot confirm that these events are technically related, but the overlap in timing appears significant enough to justify investigation. If there is a shared underlying cause, such as an issue with automated enforcement, quota accounting, or another backend system, identifying that connection could help explain why so many legitimate paying users were affected within such a short period.
If it would assist an investigation, many of the affected users I have spoken with are willing to provide additional information through the appropriate support channels. I would also be willing to organize these cases and help coordinate communication if it would assist OpenAI in determining whether there was a broader false-positive enforcement issue.
I respectfully ask the OpenAI team to review the recent wave of account suspensions, especially if automated enforcement systems were involved.
In particular, I hope OpenAI will consider:
* Reviewing recent account suspensions for potential false positives.
* Investigating whether there is any connection between the recent suspensions and the reported Codex quota anomalies.
* Providing clearer explanations when enforcement actions are taken.
* Improving the appeal process for legitimate paying users.
* Publishing an official clarification if there was an enforcement issue or an unusually high number of false positives.
I am not asking OpenAI to weaken its enforcement against genuine abuse. On the contrary, I believe strong enforcement is essential for protecting the platform. My concern is that reducing false positives is equally important. Legitimate paying users need confidence that they will not lose access to their accounts without a clear reason, especially after purchasing official subscriptions.
I hope OpenAI will carefully investigate these reports, communicate transparently with affected users, and restore confidence in the official subscription channels. I believe this would benefit both the community and OpenAI in the long term.
If other community members have experienced similar situations recently, I would appreciate hearing about your experiences as well.
The image shows the grey-market channels I’ve come across — they are still selling at the moment.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
