Unexplained Usage - Chat Completions & Responses

This is another response we got from one of their stupid agents:

I understand how concerning this situation has been, especially with the unexpected spike in usage, the missing logs you encountered, and the impact on your billing. I can see you’ve done a detailed investigation on your end, and it’s completely reasonable to want clear answers on what caused this activity and whether the charges are valid.

After reviewing your account, the charges were processed because the auto-charge setting was enabled at the time the usage occurred, which allows usage to be billed automatically as it accumulates. We can see that this setting was disabled on April 12, 2026. The charges reflect API usage that was successfully processed using your project’s API key during the April 7–12 timeframe you outlined.

Based on our review, there is no indication of a billing system error, and the charges correspond to recorded usage tied to your account. While we’re not able to provide additional audit logs, request metadata, or stored request/response content beyond what is available in your dashboard, the pattern described is consistent with activity generated through an active API key. In cases like this, unexpected usage can occur if an API key is exposed, and rotating keys along with applying restrictions such as IP allowlisting are the appropriate steps to help prevent recurrence.
