Intermittent rain continues in Rawalpindi and Islamabad as WASA remains on high alert
RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD: Intermittent rainfall has continued across the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad since early morning, prompting the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to place its staff and resources on high alert.
Managing Director WASA Azizullah Khan said field teams and heavy machinery had been deployed in low-lying areas to deal with any potential urban flooding and ensure the smooth drainage of rainwater.
He said dewatering operations were under way in vulnerable locations, including Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk Underpass, Murree Road and low-lying areas of Sadiqabad.
Nallah Lai being closely monitored
The WASA chief said Nallah Lai was being continuously monitored and that water flow in the stream remained within normal levels.
According to rainfall data shared by WASA, 29 millimetres of rain was recorded at Saidpur, 17mm at Bokra, 13mm at Golra, 38mm at the Pakistan Meteorological Department station, 19mm at Pirwadhai, 35mm at Gawalmandi, 24mm at Kutchery and 34mm at Katarian. Simialrly rainfall recorded also includes 31mm at Saidpur, 22mm at Bokra, 17mm at Golra, 43mm at the Pakistan Meteorological Department station, 49mm at Shamsabad, 23mm at Pirwadhai, 41mm at Gawalmandi, 28mm at Kutchery and 40mm at Katarian.
Citizens urged to cooperate
A WASA spokesperson said field officers were personally supervising drainage operations on the instructions of the managing director.
The agency appealed to residents to avoid throwing garbage into drains and sewer lines and to ensure that drain covers remain unobstructed to facilitate the flow of rainwater.
Citizens were also advised to contact the WASA helpline in case of any emergency or drainage-related issues.
