Matt Clark, veteran actor in Clint Eastwood and John Wayne Westerns, dies at 89

Matt Clark, the veteran character actor known for his roles across dozens of Hollywood Westerns, has died at the age of 89.

Clark died in Austin, Texas, his daughter confirmed, following complications from a back injury he sustained months earlier.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Clark became a familiar face in classic Westerns, appearing alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Clint Eastwood, John Wayne and Paul Newman.

His credits include films such as The Outlaw Josey Wales , The Cowboys  and The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean , where he carved out a reputation as one of the genre’s most reliable supporting actors.

A defining presence in Western cinema

Clark’s work extended across some of the most influential Westerns of the 20th century, including Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid  and Hearts of the West.

He also starred opposite Robert Redford in Jeremiah Johnson  and Brubaker , delivering one of his most recognised performances as prison clerk Purcell.

Beyond Westerns, Clark built a diverse filmography with roles in In the Heat of the Night , Return to Oz  and Back to the Future Part III.

A career spanning decades

Born in 1936 in Washington and raised in Virginia, Clark initially studied business before pursuing acting in New York.

He trained at the HB Studio and began his career on stage before transitioning to film in the 1960s.

Over the years, he appeared in more than 120 productions across film and television, becoming known for his versatility and strong screen presence.

Tributes described him as a defining character actor of Hollywood’s golden era, with performances that often elevated the films he appeared in.

Clark is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.
