  "textContent": "Matt Clark, the veteran character actor known for his roles across dozens of Hollywood Westerns, has died at the age of 89.\n\nClark died in Austin, Texas, his daughter confirmed, following complications from a back injury he sustained months earlier.\n\nOver a career spanning more than five decades, Clark became a familiar face in classic Westerns, appearing alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Clint Eastwood, John Wayne and Paul Newman.\n\nHis credits include films such as _The Outlaw Josey Wales_ , _The Cowboys_  and _The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean_ , where he carved out a reputation as one of the genre’s most reliable supporting actors.\n\n## A defining presence in Western cinema\n\nClark’s work extended across some of the most influential Westerns of the 20th century, including _Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid_  and _Hearts of the West_.\n\nHe also starred opposite Robert Redford in _Jeremiah Johnson_  and _Brubaker_ , delivering one of his most recognised performances as prison clerk Purcell.\n\nBeyond Westerns, Clark built a diverse filmography with roles in _In the Heat of the Night_ , _Return to Oz_  and _Back to the Future Part III_.\n\n## A career spanning decades\n\nBorn in 1936 in Washington and raised in Virginia, Clark initially studied business before pursuing acting in New York.\n\nHe trained at the HB Studio and began his career on stage before transitioning to film in the 1960s.\n\nOver the years, he appeared in more than 120 productions across film and television, becoming known for his versatility and strong screen presence.\n\nTributes described him as a defining character actor of Hollywood’s golden era, with performances that often elevated the films he appeared in.\n\nClark is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.\n\nThe post Matt Clark, veteran actor in Clint Eastwood and John Wayne Westerns, dies at 89 appeared first on HUM News.",
