Aussie road cycling has been struggling for years – AusCycling wants to change that

It’s no secret that road racing in Australia has long existed on shaky ground. That’s true at the highest level of competition, the ProVelo Super League (previously the National Road Series), where races are getting more expensive to run, sponsors are increasingly difficult to come by – even for the best teams in the country – and where the very existence of a national competition is a year-by-year prospect.

But it’s also true at the grassroots level. Participation numbers in club races are in decline, races are disappearing due to a range of factors, and it’s getting harder and harder to find locations to run events safely and economically.

Which is where a new initiative from AusCycling comes in.

Launched earlier this week, the AusCycling Road Taskforce has been established to “support a sustainable and thriving road racing ecosystem in Australia.” In revealing the new project, AusCycling didn’t shy away from some uncomfortable truths.
