Is A&W Canadian?

Just found out this Wikipedia article where it says its american: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%26W_Restaurants

But then in there there is a link to this other article where it says that A&W Canada is actually a separate Canadian company: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%26W_(Canada)

Kind of confusing to be honest but if I understood correctly, it seems like buying in there is not supporting the americans, am I right?
