a dark mode like AutoPageColor would be very welcome, ideally with automatic activation on launch for this plugin, but which remains active without requiring constant access to the settings.

For automatic dark mode on Pale Moon, you need AutoPageColor as well as Swarth. The former automates the changing of preferred colors to dark mode between sunset/sunrise, the latter does the actual changing of colors on webpages.
