UK plans to pass law banning anyone born after 2008 to buy cigarettes

I don’t know why, but something about my reading/understanding around this specific case has/had me trying to wrap my head around the legitimacy of a grandfather clause and why X date was picked.

I think this is the only reason people are up in arms about this law.

The news is weirdly framing this as some sort of attack on people born after 2008, when it’s literally just a ban on cigarettes with an exception for current smokers born in 2008 and earlier. This happens all the time with laws banning things, because the government generally shouldn’t take away privileges from people who already have them.

Eventually stopping everyone from smoking is the only goal.
