This is a little off topic.
I think there’s a lot of assumptions and whatnot one is making in those links explaining why it’s offensive and why it’s outdated.
First of all, even Global South is wrong. Many of these countries are above the equator so that’s two billion at least.
Second, who is giving the people who are writing about this the authority to speak on behalf of these countries and its people and claim that using these phrases is wrong?
This is a very typical western mindset people have where they think gate keeping words is the best bastion for ensuring equality.
Having escaped a third world country myself, I can tell you that many people in these countries don’t mind their nations being called that. Everyone is trying to escape these places for a reason. Most don’t make it but people living there or even choosing to live there for whatever reason don’t mind their country being called third world. Obviously not everyone is going to feel this way but it is the general consensus I’ve gathered from my personal experience atleast.
A third world country would be sticking to facts. It is. Are we denying facts now? And I think we should keep calling for what it is because if not, there’s no urgency in the lexicon we adapt to force these places to change and get better.
