Man dies after plunging off bridge into Chicago River in Loop

A man died after falling from a bridge in the Loop Sunday evening, according to Chicago police.
Police and paramedics responded to a call in the 100 block of East Jackson Boulevard at 6:55 p.m. and found Fernando Velazquez Contreras, 31, in the Chicago River unresponsive, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Contreras, of the 1900 block of West 17th Street, was taken to Northwestern Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:25 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
An autopsy is scheduled.
Area 3 detectives are investigating.
