A "mayday" is an emergency alert meaning they have lost communication with a firefighter who is inside the structure.
Over police radio, an OEMC dispatcher told an officer that the situation was a "mayday fire," and a firefighter fell through the roof. The firefighter arrived at Stroger at 12:28 p.m., the dispatcher said.
Several people including a dog had been displaced, according to the dispatcher.
As of 1 p.m. Chicago police officers had the scene blocked off to pedestrians and motorists.
