Books where, not only do bad things happen to the protagonist, but the protagonist deals with them in self-destructive/self-sabotaging ways

For reference, I’ve recently read and LOVED: The Goldfinch, Demon Copperhead, My Year of Rest and Relaxation, The Bell Jar, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. I want someone who’s REALLY going through it. Darker themes like mental illness, substance abuse/addiction, etc. are a plus! Thanks! by just_julia82
