EA Sports has shared a detailed look at Mascot Mashup, a standalone mode arriving on day one with College Football 27 when the game launches in July. The mode brings mascots back to the spotlight, but this is not simply a recreation of the mascot games featured in older college football titles. Developers describe it as a new experience built specifically for College Football 27 with a focus on quick games, school pride, collecting mascots and a lighter take on the sport. The mode is tied directly to the Trophy Room progression system and is designed as an easy way for players to jump into a game without the pressure of a traditional matchup. Mascot Mashup sits directly on the main menu and features 11-on-11 games where every player on the field is a mascot. Every mascot is rated 99 overall, putting the emphasis on stick skills, play calling, timing and execution instead of roster advantages. While the core gameplay remains intact, the mode leans into the fun side of college football with cartoon-style sound effects, larger-than-life personalities and plenty of unexpected moments. The mode supports online play, offline play and Play a Friend options at launch. According to the development team, the social side of the experience was a major focus, with quick games designed for rivalry matchups, couch competition and collecting mascots with friends. At launch, players will have access to 120 mascots. Ten mascots are unlocked immediately, including representatives from Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon, Georgia, Oklahoma, Indiana, Miami, Tulane, Texas Tech and James Madison. The remaining mascots can be earned through gameplay. Players simply need to win a Play Now game using a school’s team to unlock that school’s mascot. Progress can be tracked through both the Trophy Room and team selection screens. Simulated games do not count toward unlocks, ensuring every mascot is earned through gameplay. For those who want immediate access to the full roster, an instant unlock option will be available through the MVP+ Membership. Players can still unlock mascots normally through gameplay if they choose not to use the premium option. Gameplay introduces several twists while still following standard football rules. Mascots move faster, break tackles more frequently and are capable of bigger hits and more explosive plays. Exclusive trick plays have been added to the mode, along with enhanced option mechanics, flashy ball-carrier moves and the return of the side flip made popular in NCAA Football 14. Passing also gets a boost with higher leaping catches and more opportunities for highlight-reel completions. Special teams see some changes as well. Mascots can attempt field goals from significantly longer distances with kicks reaching roughly 80 yards under the right conditions. At the same time, hit-stick tackles create more fumbles, adding another layer of unpredictability to each game. Pre-snap dances, unique touchdown celebrations and oversized mascot antics help separate the mode from the standard college football experience. The developers describe the result as football that still rewards skill but does not take itself too seriously. The Trophy Room serves as the centerpiece of the collection system. Every unlocked mascot becomes part of a player’s collection, giving completionists a place to track progress and showcase what they have earned. Developers said the goal was to create a mode that feels easy to understand while still giving players a reason to keep coming back. Mascot Mashup doesn’t feature custom broadcast packages or mascot-specific animations at launch, as the team focused its efforts on gameplay flow, progression and accessibility.
