"textContent": "## **Charity at 11**\n\nFog-swamped Oxford colored\n\nin smog, Little Clarendon a film noir;\n\nI put a coat over my coat and\n\nwalk down to death row of\n\nthin duvets, on the lookout\n\nfor a woolly-bear to offer the old coat\n\nshedding goose down-fill\n\nto goad on fate, in return.\n\nThis is new: the topsy-turvy,\n\nthe head that whirls\n\ninstead of aches, the breaths\n\nout of step; it’s still so\n\nearly in the night, at least\n\nin any other country, but even the\n\nbeggars here are fast\n\nasleep, and it’s quiet, the\n\nold coat heavy, the yellow dark.\n\nShould I wake them\n\nfor a coat? Whisper, and\n\nno response; move on.\n\nAn hour’s walk. His friends have\n\ncoats. He, just a tattered blue\n\nhoodie, college insignia mocking\n\nhim. I mock him more, offering my\n\ntattered charity.\n\nStill the topsy-turvy, the head\n\nthat whirls instead of aches, the\n\nbreaths out of step, and it’s still\n\nso early in the night.\n\nThe city is as liver-eyed\n\nas before; my body still\n\na casket in a rattletrap\n\nhearse, just without\n\nthe dandruff at its\n\ntail, and distracted by\n\nthe possibility that I might\n\nhave left him extras\n\nin the coat’s five pockets.\n\n* * *\n\n_Morad is a writer and scholar with a DPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies from Oxford. He is the author of two novels, The Least of Beings (2018) and Skunk Hour (2025). His work spans fiction, poetry, and cultural criticism, though he most prefers writing poetry and fiction.\n\nSocials: @aghamorad_",
