Not just checked your milestone dates.\n\nI mean really zoomed out and asked:\n\n  * How does my project fit into the bigger picture?\n  * What else is happening in the organization that affects my work?\n  * Are we solving the right problem, or just the one in front of us?\n\n\n\nIf you can't remember... you're not alone.\n\nMost project managers are so deep in the trees—tasks, deadlines, dependencies, issues—that they forget there's a forest.\n\nAnd when you lose sight of the forest, you risk spending months building something that doesn't matter.\n\nOr worse: building the  _right_ thing in the  _wrong_ context.\n\n* * *\n\n### **The Principle: Context Awareness**\n\nContext Awareness is about understanding how your project fits within the larger organizational ecosystem—and recognizing the interconnections that influence outcomes.\n\nIt's systems thinking in action.\n\nHere's what I mean:\n\nYour project doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's connected to:\n\n  * **Other projects** that might overlap, conflict, or depend on your work\n  * **Strategic initiatives** that determine whether your project gets continued support\n  * **Organizational changes** (leadership shifts, budget cuts, mergers) that can derail you overnight\n  * **Market dynamics** that change what \"success\" looks like mid-flight\n  * **Technical dependencies** you didn't know existed until something breaks\n\n\n\nMost PMs treat these as \"external factors\" they can't control.\n\nBut leaders? **Leaders map the system.**\n\nThey understand the context they're operating in. They see the connections. They anticipate the ripple effects.\n\nAnd they make better decisions because of it.\n\n* * *\n\n### **The Danger of Tunnel Vision**\n\nI am currently in the middle of a long term software system upgrade.\n\nA year ago, parts of the management team for that business unit turned over.\n\nI recently held a meeting with the system users and confirmed that we are still good with the current plan.\n\nBut...\n\nI am well aware that new management could shift the ENTIRE thing.\n\nI am closely paying attention to the context.\n\nI also paying attention to potential turnover in other departments.\n\nWhy?\n\nBecause a personnel crisis in another department MAY require the team to shift focus and assist.\n\nAnd any shift, would impact the system upgrade.\n\nIt would be an error for me to focus on  _executing the plan_ that I miss  _the potentially changing landscape_.\n\n* * *\n\n### **Complexity Isn't the Enemy**\n\nHere's where most PMs get stuck:\n\nThey see complexity and think, \"I don't have time for this. I just need to focus on my project.\"\n\nBut that's backwards.\n\n**Context Awareness doesn't add complexity. It reduces risk.**\n\nWhen you understand the system you're operating in:\n\n  * You spot dependencies before they become blockers\n  * You anticipate changes before they derail you\n  * You align your work with what actually matters to the organization\n  * You build relationships with people who can help (or hurt) your project\n\n\n\nYou're not adding work. You're working smarter.\n\n* * *\n\n### **Connecting the Dots**\n\nContext Awareness is about pattern recognition across the organization.\n\nAsk yourself:\n\n  * **What other projects are happening right now?** Do they overlap with mine? Compete for the same resources? Depend on similar stakeholders?\n  * **What's leadership talking about?** What themes keep coming up in all-hands meetings or executive updates?\n  * **What's changing in our market or industry?** Are there trends that make my project more or less critical?\n  * **Who else cares about this problem?** Are there allies I haven't connected with yet?\n  * **What's the political landscape?** Who has influence? Where are the power dynamics shifting?\n\n\n\nThese aren't distractions. **They're the system.**\n\nAnd when you understand the system, you can navigate it.\n\n* * *\n\n### **The AI Advantage**\n\nHere's where GenAI becomes a game-changer for Context Awareness:\n\nAI excels at **connecting dots across complex information** that humans can't hold in their heads.\n\nYou can feed AI:\n\n  * Meeting notes from different teams\n  * Strategic documents and announcements\n  * Project charters from related initiatives\n  * Market research and industry trends\n  * Stakeholder communication across months\n\n\n\nAnd AI can help you:\n\n  * Identify patterns and themes you'd miss\n  * Map dependencies between your project and others\n  * Flag potential conflicts or synergies\n  * Spot early warning signs of change\n  * Understand how your work connects to strategic priorities\n\n\n\nSuddenly, you're not just managing your project in isolation.\n\n**You're leading strategically within the system.**\n\n* * *\n\n### **This Week's Prompt**\n\nUse this prompt to map the context around your project:\n\n**Copy/paste this into your fave LLM:**\n\n\n    WHO: Act as a systems thinking consultant with expertise in organizational dynamics and strategic alignment\n\n    WHY: because I'm too deep in project execution and need to zoom out to understand how my project connects to the larger organizational ecosystem\n\n    WHAT: based on the information below about my project and organization, help me:\n    1.
