For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is Aparajito (1956) (that means “Unvanquished” in Bengali), an urban-themed Indian drama from the most renowned Indian director of all time, Satyajit Ray; we have previously watched his films The Big City (1963), The Adventures of Goopy and Bagha (1969), and The Kingdom of Diamonds (1980). It is the direct sequel to Pather Panchali (1955), which we watched last week, centering on an older version of the protagonist from that film, Apu, as he and his mother move from the countryside into the big city. As Apu begins his education, he grows more distant from his mother, a tendency that will cause some drama. As with its predecessor, this is considered atypical for Indian films of the time for its Italian-neorealist-esque tone, eschewing the usual song and dance numbers in favor of gritty, grounded drama. Also features a soundtrack by famed Indian musician Ravi Shankar. This is widely considered one of the greatest films of all time; it is currently ranked #204 on the Letterboxd Top 500.

Next is Masters of the Universe (2026), the second live-action adaptation of the He-Man toy line, following Masters of the Universe (1987), which we watched last night. It stars a tower of sentient muscle named Adam who transforms into He-Man with a magic sword to battle the evil forces of Skeletor (Jared Leto). Expect a whole lot of fantasy duels and monsters and what-have-you along the way This has generally been better-received than the previous film, though it is still pretty sloppy. Director Travis Knight also helmed Kuby and the Two Strings (2016) and Bumblebee (2018).

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
