For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Squid Game Season 2 (2024), a Korean Netflix series set in a dystopian world in which cash-strapped contestants agree to compete against each other in children’s games for a cash prize, only to discover that the penalty for losing is death. Who will be the last person standing to collect the loot, and what kind of twisted minds came up with this game, anyway? I guess we’ll find out. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk is otherwise best-known for the acclaimed drama Silenced (2011), which we have not yet watched, but we will. This was a huge hit when it debuted on Netflix, and Letterboxd loves it, so let’s give it a whirl. Episodes 7 of season 2 (finishing it off), and episodes 1 and 2 of season 3 tonight.

After that is Killer’s Kiss (1955), a 67-minute, low-budget film-noir made by some nobody named Stanley Kubrick. A past-his-prime boxer falls in love with a dancer, and their romance attracts the ire of the dancer’s boss, who also wants her. The boss’s henchmen kidnap her and the boxer has to venture into the city’s criminal underbelly to get her back. Expect a whole lot long shadows and smoking in dimly-lit rooms. This was Kubrick’s second feature, and is generally considered a vast improvement over his debut, Fear and Desire (1952), which we watched last week.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:
