Nevertheless, I’ve got a lot of stuff to show today, so we’re starting half an hour earlier than usual.\n\n# **What’s the chef cookin’ tonight?**\n\n### **Overview:**\n\n * Reserved time: 210 minutes\n * _The Big Bang Theory_ S1E1~6: 128 minutes\n * Each episode is ~21 minutes\n * _Magic Heart and the Magical Warriors_ E4: 10 minutes\n * Three Esperanto-language short films: 9 minutes\n * Each short is <5 minutes long\n * TV☆3SIS flourishes: 7 minutes\n * Estimated door-holding: 15 minutes\n * Estimated slack: 41 minutes\n\n\n\n### **Why I want to show _The Big Bang Theory_ :**\n\nWhen I was a little kid, my family would often gather around our old CRT TV to watch _America’s Funniest Home Videos_ on Kraut-and-later-Seppo-owned TVNorge. We would often catch the very ends of TBBT episodes before we got to “the good stuff” that was AFV, and we _despised_ the show’s crass humor and could not wait for it to be over, perhaps even to the point of booing it. And yet, one day, we decided to give TBBT a “fair shot”, and found that we actually enjoyed it quite a bit. This was perhaps related to me becoming an older kid who wanted more “mature” entertainment. And so TBBT soon ended up replacing AFV as our go-to show on TVNorge. We’d eventually catch up on all the TBBT episodes and follow the show all the way to its conclusion in 2019. This makes TBBT probably the longest TV show I’ve seen from start to finish.\n\nIt’s not like TBBT was a _huge_ part of my life as a kid, but it was still something that I dedicated some amount of time to each week for over a decade. So you can understand that I’m very keen to revisit it just to answer questions like, “What the heck did I even SEE in it?” “How bad is it, really?” and “What nonsense did I learn from it as a kid?”. It’s a show abounding in white supremacy, settlerism, patriarchy, lookism, ableism and more, that uses a laugh track to peer pressure audiences at home into seeing the behaviors as harmless and comedic. Beyond that, it’s a cultural export that serves to maintain Seppo hegemony, and shape and reproduce the “American” national identity. I guess this is to say that TBBT could be an interesting object of study from these perspectives. Or maybe it could just be a good hate-watch. Or even a critical love-watch, according to your preference.\n\n### **For those unfamiliar with what _The Big Bang Theory_ is:**\n\n_**The Big Bang Theory**_ (TBBT) is a Seppolandic TV sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. It aired 279 episodes across 12 seasons between 2007 and 2019, making it one of the most successful TV sitcoms of all time… at least by ratings and number of episodes, not so much by lasting cultural impact, I’d say. TBBT originally aired on CBS and has two spinoffs in the form of _Young Sheldon_ and _Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage_, with a third spinoff in the works titled _Stuart Fails to Save the Universe_. TBBT is most known for its use of a live studio audience to provide laughter for jokes that are, more often than not, not actually funny. See, TBBT’s jokes tend to be overly reliant on simple references to pop science and pop culture; or if not reference humor, another staple of TBBT’s comedy is just characters being dicks for no reason. Some people, however, argue that TBBT is kinda overhated, and that there actually is more to the show’s humor than many people give it credit for.\n\nIn any case, we’re only watching the first six episodes of the show tonight, and I will not show TBBT again after this. This is merely a taste of what the show’s like.\n\nSeason 1 plot description from English Wikipedia:\n\n> The series centers on the evolving relationships between socially awkward physicists Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper, their neighbor Penny, and their friends Howard Wolowitz [aerospace engineer] and Raj Koothrappali [astrophysicist]. The central romantic storyline begins when Leonard becomes immediately attracted to Penny, an aspiring actress and waitress who moves in across the hall. Throughout the first season, Leonard attempts various schemes to win Penny’s affection while she dates a series of conventionally attractive but intellectually incompatible men.\n>\n> The group’s friendship dynamics are established as they navigate their shared interests in science fiction, comic books, and video games, often clashing with their limited social skills. Sheldon’s rigid personality and numerous quirks create ongoing conflicts with his roommate Leonard, while Howard’s inappropriate behavior toward women and his unhealthy relationship with his mother provide additional comedic [sic] tension. Raj’s selective mutism around women becomes a recurring obstacle to his romantic pursuits.\n\nPlot descriptions for individual TBBT episodes from English Wikipedia\n\n**S1E1: PILOT** — After an unsuccessful visit to the high-IQ sperm bank, Dr. Leonard Hofstadter and Dr. Sheldon Cooper return home to find aspiring actress Penny is their new neighbor across the hall from their apartment. Sheldon thinks Leonard, who is immediately interested in her, is chasing a dream he will never catch. Leonard invites Penny to his and Sheldon’s apartment for Indian food, where she asks to use their shower since hers is broken. While wrapped in a towel, she gets to meet their visiting friends Howard Wolowitz, a wannabe ladies’ man who tries to hit on her, and Rajesh Koothrappali, who is unable to speak to her as he suffers from selective mutism in the presence of women. Leonard is so infatuated with Penny that, after helping her use their shower, he agrees to retrieve her TV from her ex-boyfriend Kurt. However, Kurt’s physical superiority overwhelms Leonard and Sheldon, and they return without pants or Penny’s TV. Penny, feeling bad, offers to take the guys out to dinner, initiating a friendship with them. **S1E2: THE BIG BRAN HYPOTHESIS** — When Sheldon and Leonard drop off a box of flat pack furniture that came for Penny, Sheldon is deeply disturbed at how messy and disorganized her apartment is. Later that night, while Penny sleeps, the obsessive-compulsive Sheldon, unable to sleep, sneaks into her apartment to organize and clean it. Leonard finds out and reluctantly helps him. The next morning, Penny is furious to discover they had been in her apartment. Sheldon tries to apologize to Penny but fails by remarking that Leonard is a “gentle and thorough lover”. Later, Penny encounters Raj in the hallway. Though he cannot talk to Penny, she calms down whilst telling him about the issue, reasoning the guys were just trying to help her, and hugs Raj. Then Leonard apologizes, prompting Penny to forgive and hug him. In the end, the guys help Penny set up her furniture only to begin seriously overthinking the best way to get started while Penny ends up putting everything together herself, although she does admit that her apartment looks better than it was before. **S1E3: THE FUZZY BOOTS COROLLARY** — When a dejected Leonard sees Penny kissing a man in front of her apartment door, the guys persuade him to date someone at work, so he approaches fellow scientist Leslie Winkle. In an experiment to strip the usual dating procedure to its essentials, she suggests fast forwarding to a kiss. She finds their kiss good but unexciting, so she turns him down. As Leonard becomes more depressed, thinking of buying a cat, Sheldon points out that Penny never rejected him as he never asked her out, so Leonard asks her out to dinner. As she misinterprets this as an invitation to hang out with all the guys, he devises reasons for their absence from the date. Penny says the man Leonard saw was not her boyfriend: casual weekend sex helps her get over relationships. Leonard, excited, regains his confidence, but he accidentally hurts himself and Penny has to take him home. In the end, Leonard does not find the courage to reveal his true feelings to Penny, though she suspected what he was up to. **S1E4: THE LUMINOUS FISH EFFECT** — Sheldon is fired from his job as a physicist at a university after insulting his new boss Dr. Eric Gablehauser. Sheldon’s change of circumstance triggers a downward spiral of depression in which he fails to improve scrambled eggs, develops luminous fish for nightlights, and weaves on a hand loom. Worried, Leonard calls Sheldon’s mother, Mary Cooper. When she visits, the men realize she is the complete opposite of their expectations: she is sweet, down-to-earth, a devout Christian, and a loving and caring mother. Mary finally forces Sheldon to apologize; he is given his job back after she flirts with Dr. Gablehauser. **S1E5: THE HAMBURGER POSTULATE** — The guys, eating at the Cheesecake Factory where Penny works, are approached by Leslie Winkle. She wants Leonard to play cello in her string quartet as the other players are uncomfortable near the current cellist who was possibly irradiated at work. After the quartet practice in Leonard and Sheldon’s apartment, Leslie seduces Leonard for the night, making Sheldon so uneasy that he repeatedly asks Penny’s advice. Penny later congratulates Leonard, who tries to figure out what she meant. Leonard decides to pursue a real relationship with Leslie rather than an imaginary one with Penny, but at her lab, Leslie makes it clear she is not interested in a relationship: she just needed him for a one-night stand to satisfy her sex drive - which is now satisfied until New Year. Leonard later tells Penny, who reassures him and walks away smiling. **S1E6: THE MIDDLE-EARTH PARADIGM** — Penny invites the guys to her Halloween party. They at first decline as they do not dance, but accept when costumes are mentioned. At the party they have problems socializing: Sheldon is unable to explain his Doppler effect costume since none of Penny’s friends are physicists or smart enough to understand it; Raj (dressed as Thor) cannot speak to women; Howard as Robin Hood is mistaken for Peter Pan; and Leonard (dressed as Frodo Baggins from _The Lord of the Rings_) is insecure. Penny’s ex-boyfriend Kurt (underdressed as a very tall, muscular caveman) later shows up and aggressively confronts Leonard, causing him to leave. A drunk Penny goes to check on Leonard and apologizes for Kurt’s behavior, confessing that Kurt played on her emotions to come to her party. She is very upset, but Leonard tells her she is perfect, and they kiss, but Leonard stops it from going any further, not wanting to take advantage of her drunken and emotional state. They kiss again, in sight of Kurt, Leonard saying “That’s how we roll at the Shire!” before locking his apartment door in panic. Meanwhile, Howard cannot find Raj, who is at home sleeping with a girl who finds him to be a “such a good listener”.\n\n### **And a few palate cleansers…**\n\nStarting half an hour earlier allows me to fit in a few palate cleansers after _The Big Bang Theory_ , namely:\n\n#### _**Magic Heart and the Magical Warriors**_\n\nWhat is fanime?\n\nA _fanime_ (etym. blend of _fan_ + _anime_) is basically when someone makes an anime-style cartoon show by drawing frames in MS Paint; compositing them in Windows Movie Maker with pirated music, stock sound effects, and dialog recorded in one take on potato microphones; and posting the result to YouTube. This isn’t necessarily accurate of all fanime, but the throughline is in any case that fanime is a form of democratized amateur animation combining anime aesthetics with “Internet Ugly”. The style is most associated with the Western anime fandom of the mid-2000s through mid-2010s, where it was often difficult to distinguish sincere fanime shows from parodies of the genre.\n\n_**Magic Heart and the Magical Warriors**_ is a 2007-2009 magical girl fanime series created by MagicMe123, who seems to be German. It is notable for being presumably the longest fanime of all time, and among the oldest fanime to reach a proper conclusion, clocking in at 9½ hours long across 52 episodes and a “7-part movie”, according to Fanime Realm. The episodes are normally around 10 minutes each.\n\nI think _Magic Heart_ is further notable for its rigid and geometric art style, with the same few poses being copy-pasted over and over again to simplify the animation process. Also, all the voice acting is done through Microsoft Sam text to speech.\n\nPlot description from Fanime Realm:\n\n> With the evil forces of the Dark Empire threatening to take over the world, a young girl must take on the role of Magic Heart, fight alongside her Magical Warrior companions, and save the world!\n\nI’ll keep showing _Magic Heart_ as long as people are interested in it. I skipped _Magic Heart_ last week due to time constraints but Cuban was really looking forward to it so I won’t keep xem waiting any longer.\n\n#### **Short films from La 7-a Usona Bona Film-Festivalo**\n\nLa Usona Bona Film-Festivalo is a film festival for Seppolandic short films in the Esperanto language. The seventh and most recent UBFF was at the end of last year. The film festival is organized by esperanto-usa.org, who publishes the short films onto their YouTube channel. Many of these short films have English subtitles, and it’s a few of these that I’ll be showing tonight, namely:\n\n * **“Krepusko”** — A _Twilight Saga_ parody about Esperanto speakers who are obsessed with making short films. Runtime 2 minutes.\n * **“Hokita”** — A short film by the current president of Esperanto-USA. He was not eligible to win a prize due to his position in the organization, but he still wanted to participate with a short film inspired by his recent trip to Venice. Runtime 3 minutes.\n * **“Bona Esperanto Por La Ĉiutaga Vivo!”** — The title means “Good Esperanto for Everyday Life”. Runtime 4 minutes.\n\n\n\n# **Content warnings and accessibility**\n\n**Audio description:** Not available.\n\n**Sign language:** Not available.\n\n**Captions:** English softsubs for the d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing (The Big Bang Theory) Not available (Magic Heart) English and Esperanto softsubs, dialog only (Esperanto short films)\n\n**Language of audio:** English (The Big Bang Theory, Magic Heart) Esperanto (Esperanto short films)\n\n**Content warnings:**\n\n * ALCOHOL ABUSE\n * Child abuse and generally messed up family dynamics\n * Bigotry: Misogyny incl. sexual objectification, racism esp. towards South Asians, fatphobia, homophobia, transphobia, aphobia, ableism esp. towards autistic people\n * Jokes about sexual assault on men\n * Men ridiculed for crying\n * Suffocation\n * Child nudity\n * Children in peril\n\n\n\nPlease refer to DTDD for more content warnings: www.doesthedogdie.com/media/600015\n\n# **Land acknowledgement**\n\n### **_The Big Bang Theory_ was made on Tongva land.**\n\n_**The Big Bang Theory**_ was primarily filmed at Stage 25 of Warner Bros Studios in Tovaangar, the unceded homeland of the Uto-Aztecan-speaking Tongva people. More specifically, Warner Bros Studios is located in Burbank, Los Angeles County, only about 4 km southwest of Disney Television Animation. Maps published by the LA Times based on the work of scholars Steven Hackel, Stephen O’Neil, Nat Zappia and Jeanette Zerneke identifies the location of the historical village of Cahuenga (Kawee’nga among other spellings) as being very close to Warner Bros Studios, possibly within the boundaries of modern-day Universal City. Kawee’nga may mean either “place of the hill” or “place of the fox”. The historical village is today the namesake of Cahuenga Peak among other landmarks in the area.\n\nThe streets of Los Angeles were built by the slave labor of Tongva people arrested by settler police for “vagrancy and public drunkenness” after Seppoland annexed Tovaangar without treaty. The Tongva people today are still unrecognized by the governments of California and Seppoland, while the California Natives who did sign treaties with Seppoland never had those treaties ratified. This lack of Indigenous treaties in California presents unique legal challenges for the state’s Natives compared to Natives elsewhere in Seppoland.\n\nThe economic prosperity of Los Angeles that allowed an animation industry to develop in the city necessarily has its basis in the continuous and systemic disposession of Tongva people from their land. The Tongva had no say in approving the construction of Disney’s animation studio and sees none of the profit generated by the cartoons drawn on their land. And although piracy avoids putting money directly into the pockets of settler capitalists, unpaid fan labor _such as_ pirate uploading still contributes to the overall values of the intellectual properties in question, just as any other labor adds to the value of any other commodity.\n\nTongva people still exist and still live in Tovaangar today. The Tongva still fight, as they have for centuries, to exercise their sovereignty over their homeland and resources. The Tongva are not a monolith nor in any way static: they are stratified by class like any other nation under capitalism; they adapt new technologies to their needs like any other nation; and also like any other nation, they have individual members intersected by every axis of oppression and each with their own individual perspectives.\n\nHere’s a relevant charity:\n\n * www.tongva.land\n\n\n\nI would also recommend listening to “An Indigenous Perspective On The Chicano Movement”, as it is very relevant to the topic of Mexican colonization of the Southwest and its lingering impact on the settler-colonial contradiction in e.g. Tovaangar today.\n\nSOLIDARITY WINS THE FREEDOM OF NATIONS!\n\n* * *\n\n_♫ Uniting nations at the speeeed of liiiiight ♫_\n_[epic sax solo]_\n_♫ Station of the '20s — TV☆3SIS! ♫_",
