This week’s Hairy Harmonies side with the anti-fascist Republicans fighting against Franco’s Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. The movies are fictional, but represent historical events. For example, ¡Ay, Carmela! truly was a Republican anthem and Mujeres Libres (English: Free Women) was the anarchist women’s organisation that existed in Spain from 1936 to 1939. Prior to 1936, women in Spain were markedly unequal to men.

The women’s group faces the problems of fighting not only the nationalists, but also factions on the left seeking to impose a more traditional military structure.
