What the Dashboard won't tell you
Someone pushed back on last week's post. The shift isn't measure better , they said. It's measure confidence.
It's a sharper word for part of what I was getting at. When AI moves PR throughput, the dashboard shows more activity. Leaders can't tell whether the system is healthier or just busier. Confidence names what's missing.
But confidence is a visibility problem. It's about what leaders can see.
The post was also about something else. What the system has to absorb when more change reaches production. More incidents in absolute terms. Senior engineers pulled into recovery instead of review. Capability that was meant to uplift quietly turning into operational load. Humans carrying more, not less.
That's not a visibility problem. It's a load problem.
A dashboard can give you confidence. It can't tell you what the system is absorbing while you're looking at it.
Confidence is what leaders need from measurement. Better is what the system needs from the work.
Both matter. Naming them as the same thing collapses one into the other, and the one that gets lost is usually the one happening to people.
