The sheer density of intellectual debate within the Sacrestia of Santa Maria delle Grazie this week proved that Salone del Mobile is about far more than just physical objects. Curated by the design duo Formafantasma and introduced by design critic Alice Rawsthorn, ‘Prada Frames’ returned for its annual symposium, this time under the title ‘In Sight.’ Over three days, the focus remained locked on image-making, exploring how our modern preference for representation over fact acts as a potent cultural, political and material force. Day one opened by looking at the intersection of bodies, space and narrative. Paola Antonelli, a senior curator at MoMA, discussed how mediated images actually construct our spatial experience, while filmmakers Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine examined how cinema reframes architecture through the lens of lived experience. Artist and choreographer Marine Brutti (of (LA)HORDE) explored how movement shapes collective behaviour. By the afternoon, the conversation shifted toward the visibility of images: artist Alvaro Barrington and Serpentine director Hans Ulrich Obrist tackled how images draw meaning from their technological surroundings, followed by media theorist Geert Lovink, who dissected how digital platforms manipulate behaviour through opaque, “black box” systems.
