Altering a metal rivet that has stayed the same for over 250 years marks a significant turning point for Birkenstock 1744. Song for the Mute has secured this historic first for their new collaboration, introducing a custom-branded mark to a collection built around a fictional cast of characters. Melvin Tanaya and Lyna Ty, the creative duo behind the Australian label, have reimagined footwear as a diary of lived experience, where every scuff and paint splatter tells a story. The ‘Artist’ appears in a studio filled with half-finished canvases, wearing the London silhouette in textured, paint-flecked suede. This uniform is paired with distressed denim overalls that look as though they have spent years absorbing the creative process. A different energy comes from the ‘Rebel,’ who wears a black pony hair version of the Paris silhouette alongside a crisp cotton jumpsuit. The ‘Gardener’ finds their match in the Super Birki 2.0, now updated in tan rubber with clever grass-printed insoles that bring a bit of the outdoors inside.
