"textContent": "From Versailles to the Vatican and The White House, La Manufacture Cogolin’s bespoke rugs have graced the grandest of residences for over a century. Schön! alive speaks to Managing Director Sarah Henry to learn more about a heritage woven with nuance, savoir-faire and patience. In 1928, textile engineer Jean Lauer found himself in Cogolin, France, enchanted by the cerulean sea of the Gulf of Saint Tropez. Yet it was the charm of a rug factory’s craftsmanship that anchored him. He purchased the factory, which had opened in 1924, and installed 19th-century mechanical jacquard looms. Each day, he was surrounded by a symphony of women’s warbles in the workshop and a steady hum of looms beating rhythmically. Today, the century-old score, orchestrated by generations of women, can still be heard in the factory, where 94% of the production team and 88% of the workforce overall is female.
