DSL Weekly Rundown: A Record Breaking Performance

Prospects Live June 23, 2026
Source

The DSL season continues on as prospects continue to show what they can do. My goal with this weekly rundown is to point out some players who are playing well. With the first rundown last week I focused on players who performed well for the whole season. This time around the focus will be on highlighting players who showed something over the last week.

For the last week there were standout performances across the board, as well as a record being broken. It was quite the eventful week, so without any further adieu, let's dive in.

Pitcher of the Week: STL LHP Hendrick Caña

It was only one start for Caña last week, but that's all he needed to make a statement. Or continuing to making a statement, rather. The 18 year old southpaw took the mound against DSL Mets Orange and struck out 11 batters across five innings. He allowed four hits and an unearned run. This was Caña's third start of the season, where he's totaled 13 innings with a 0.69 ERA with 18 strikeouts. That totals out to one earned run, three unearned, allowed this season.

More impressive to his season is the fact that Caña has only walked two batters so far this season. There isn't much publicly available to be found on Caña, but the early results on the field are encouraging. If he continues to pitch like this, specifically limiting walks, he's going to be a name to watch moving forward.

Hitter of the Week: NYY OF Yostin Pena

This season has been going well for Yostin Pena, who is hitting .358 with a 1.151 OPS with six homers and seven steals through 67 at bats. Pena takes home hitter of the week after going 10-for-23 (.435) with a 1.314 OPS, including three home runs, 17 RBIs and a pair of steals. He was all over the scorebook, filling up the stat line in a big way.

Pena wound up with the Yankees this past IFA cycle, but he was almost in the Cardinals organization. His contract was voided by St. Louis after some concerns about his age, leaving him able to sign with the Yankees. Pena is listed at 18 years old, 6-foot-4, and 205 pounds. Here is a video, showing what looks to be a physical swing. Pena has been very successful thus far in DSL competition.

Record Breaking

Last week Angels DSL hitter Juan Cespedes was mentioned because he was the DSL leader in stolen bases at the time. Well, he turned that up a notch in a big way this week. There hasn't been any concrete proof that Cespedes broke a record, but it's widely accepted that he did. He stole eight bases in one game. EIGHT! That's an insane amount of theft. That's already impressive, but it's made more impressive by the fact that over the last week of games he recorded just one hit and three walks. While more offense would be nice, Cespedes was basically just stealing every base he could with every opportunity he got.

Don't let the down week fool you, either, Cespedes is hitting .370 over the course of 46 at bats this year. His speed continues to be the huge standout tool, as he's up to 26 stolen bases through just 14 games. Math is not my strong suit, but that projects him to steal a stupidly high amount of bases over the course of this DSL season.

Some Buzzier Names With Video

PHI OF Francisco Renteria

One prospect I personally have been keeping an eye on is Phillies outfielder Francisco Renteria. The 6-foot-3 17 year old has the potential to be a legitimate power and speed threat. He's wasted no time showing that off this season. Renteria has 60 at bats under his belt, hitting .383 with a 1.097 OPS along with two homers and seven stolen bases. Reported EVs are in the triple digits, up to 105.3 from what I've seen. The hype seems very real.

KC OF Angeibel Gomez

Another of the more exciting prospects is Royals outfielder Angeibel Gomez. He is showing off loud tools thus far in the DSL. For the season he's hitting .415 with two homers and seven steals through 41 at bats. More impressive is that Gomez has struck out just four times while walking 11. If the early returns are to be believed, Gomez is on his way to being a very exciting prospect in the coming years. The 17 year old is listed at 6-foot-2 and 173 pounds, leaving plenty to project as he progresses through his professional career.

Angeibel Gomez struck out for the first time in his pro career yesterday in the 3rd inning. It was his 35th plate appearance.

LAA SS Jeyson Horton

It's been a slower start for Jeyson Horton than some of the other highly rated international prospects who've debuted, but he may be picking things up. He recently hit his first homer as a professional. That goes along with a .268 average and .785 OPS with four steals. The projection for the 5-foot-9 listed infielder is more of a power and speed profile, but maybe this means he will be getting on track.

TEX OF Elian Rosario

The final prospect of this section for this week is Rangers outfielder Elian Rosario. The 17 year old is listed at 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds with some power potential leading the way of his profile. Rosario hit two homers in just his second game, and that has been the extent of his over the fence power output thus far. Through 48 at bats so far this year he's hitting .250 with an .862 OPS with as many walks as strikeouts. There are aspects of the statline to like, and some real power projection to be had with Rosario.

Prospect to Watch

I want to start including a prospect to watch in each Weekly Rundown. One guy that isn't a big money signing or a popular name. This week, that is going to be Astros outfielder Yensi De La Cruz. The 19 year old outfielder had plenty of success in the DSL last season, hitting .280 with five homers and 18 stolen bases. I figured there was a good chance he came stateside this year, and even almost put him on our Astros top prospect lists. De La Cruz is back in the DSL this season where he's hitting .313 with a 1.172 OPS with one homer and 15 stolen bases through 15 games. Those steal numbers are fueled by his 19 walks and just five strikeouts. This is a guy to keep an eye on in the next few years.
