Waiver Wire Wonders
In some leagues, especially those that don’t have a dedicated Injured List available, it’s an accomplishment to even have choices on your bench. Important decisions have to be made, and no one said it would be easy. The problem is that you aren’t the only one. Some weeks will be more difficult than others. That’s also the case because decisions must be made about earlier-season disappointments. Some might be available on the waiver wire, but do you strike? With the exception of players who are hot, emerging, or both, is the waiver wire option better than what’s currently on your roster? Let’s take a look at some players to consider.

Hitters – 12 Team Leagues
These players should be available in greater than 50% of most leagues.
Bryce Eldridge, UT, San Francisco Giants (85% rostered in Fantrax leagues)

In just two more games, we’re going to be in business. Eldridge currently has eight games at first base this season, and in the majority of leagues, he needs just two more games to hit 10, which means he can move out of the utility spot. As the Giants look towards the future and lean younger, it behooves them to give Eldridge more playing time. He certainly deserves it with six home runs and 16 RBI in 34 games while hitting .308. Eldridge has a .231 ISO and 13.2% barrel rate, which should lead to greater success.
Alec Bohm, 3B, Philadelphia Phillies (70% rostered in Fantrax leagues)

While there are rumors swirling around Philadelphia and potential upgrades to their lineup, it’s possible that Bohm slides across the diamond to first base. At this point, there aren’t pressures on Bohm’s playing time, and the added versatility will also help when he earns it. It’s been a rough go of things lately for Bohm, but he’s still a part of a strong Phillies’ lineup. Over the past seven days, before Philadelphia’s offensive explosion on Saturday against the Mets, Bohm hit .318 with one home run and seven RBI. That’s brought Bohm’s average up to .232; a far cry from last season when he hit .287. Bohm does have a .239 BABIP, but his .246 xBA doesn’t offer up too much optimism. The biggest concern would be Bohm’s 4.5% barrel rate, but he does have nine run home runs and 41 RBI. If you get past the batting average, Bohm can be a solid asset.
Yainer Diaz, C, Houston Astros (60% rostered in Fantrax leagues)

In one catcher league, we didn’t have the luxury of holding someone like Diaz while he was on the Injured List. Now that he’s back, though, and his return might have gotten lost in the shuffle with Hunter Brown’s return, Diaz deserves our attention. Regardless of the injury, it’s been a rough year for Diaz as his ISO fell to .111 and he has just two home runs and 14 RBI in 28 games. That came after Diaz hit 20 home runs last season and established himself as a solid catcher. This year, with only a 3.3% barrel rate, things haven’t been going nearly as well. The thought process is that Diaz will turn things around.
