"textContent": "Welcome to the second edition of xPected Edge!\n\nFor those new to the program, the goal of this series is to isolate and examine the data points behind the slash line and the box score. All season long, I'll be looking into the Data Darlings and Disasters to help expose edges for dynasty league players to either buy low on guys due for better days or sell high on players who have been performing way above their true talent.\n\nxPected Edge - Prospects LiveProspects LivePJ Benasillo\n\nThis week's issue of xPected Edge will focus on a broader analysis of individual players with notable early-season performances, rather than through the lens of a particular stat.\n\n### Jordan Walker, STL, OF\n\nPhoto Credit: Field Level Media\n\nJordan \"JWalk\" Walker has been one of the hottest \"breakouts\" of the 2026 season so far. The former Cardinals first-rounder was selected 21st overall in the 2020 MLB draft. As a pre-draft prospect, analysts loved his combination of elite high-end athleticism and a powerful frame, with an average or above-average hit tool. Walker made good on that profile over the course of his early MiLB career, quickly ascending up the ranks to be considered one of the top prospects in the game. His MiLB career slash line of .286/.364/.481 with 48 HR and 45 SB in 329 games hinted at a young talent just scratching at the surface of his enormous upside. After two full MiLB seasons, Walker forced the Cardinals' hand and was ultimately promoted to the majors for his debut in the 2023 MLB season.\n\nWalker's rookie season had some issues, most notably his proclivity to chase pitches outside the zone; however, that is not uncommon among rookies. His .787 OPS and 16 HR in 117 GP demonstrated a strong foundation to build on and hinted at enormous production upside if Walker put everything together. The former first-rounder struggled mightily in 2024. The Cardinals gave Walker a month of MLB time to start the season, but he was over his head and demoted to Triple-A for the majority of the season, only returning to the MLB level in mid-August. Walker's cumulative .686 OPS from his mid-August promotion through the end of the year painted the picture of a young player taking a step back rather than the step forward most Cardinals fans were hoping for.2025 was a similar story for Walker, except that, in addition to his struggles on the diamond, he also battled multiple injuries, including a knee injury from a sprinkler head mishap, a bout with appendicitis, and left wrist inflammation. Ultimately, 2025 was even worse than 2024, as the player who was supposed to be a franchise cornerstone for the Red Birds posted a paltry .584 OPS for the year.\n\nWith two consecutive disappointing seasons, many in the fantasy community wrote off Walker as a bust. However, the young Georgia native decided to push back against the dreaded label. This winter, Walker went to the public epicenter of player development: DriveLine. For those who have somehow never heard of the player development lab, DriveLine began in Seattle, Washington, and has fundamentally shaped the modern age of baseball. They're credited with pushing new pitches like the kick change and the sweeper. From there, they shifted to helping the hitters who have been tormented by the ever-improving arsenals employed by pitchers league-wide in the rapidly changing arms race that shapes baseball. Walker sought refuge to improve himself and finally tap into the potential that made him a highly drafted player six years ago. As noted last week, there is a generally positive correlation between bat speed and positive outcomes, but the big man had two issues that handicapped his performance mightily.\n\nFirst, Walker hit FAR too many ground balls, and far too few line drives to take advantage of his immense physical talent. Second, he swung at far too many bad pitches, leading to more strikeouts and further neutering his impact at the plate. At least early on, Walker seems to have improved dramatically in both respects. He went from the 5th percentile in LA Sweet Spot % (aka hitting the ball at the best part of the bat) all the way to the 85th percentile. In addition, he cut his chase rate by 9%, meaning that so far in 2026, Walker has been laying off pitches outside the zone. The increases in his discipline are enabling a breakout season this year.\n\nAs you can see from the blood red Savant profile above, Walker has been sensational in 2026. However, there are still issues he needs to correct. For starters, it's critical to note that most of the above-referenced stats require significantly larger sample sizes to stabilize. They are very swingy at the moment, and if Walker were to string together four consecutive Golden Sombreros, his outlook would plummet in the eyes of xStats, especially. In terms of xWOBA, xBA, or xSLG, the single worst outcome is a strikeout, because failing to put the ball in play whatsoever deprives the batter of any opportunity to accumulate positive value. That cautionary insight aside, there is a ton to like in Walker's 2026 start, and I would recommend that dynasty players try to buy the breakout, especially if there are any Walker owners who are skeptical of the early returns. It is in no way uncommon for 23-year-olds to make adjustments in response to early MLB failures and improve. There will be players drafted this June who are merely months younger than Walker. I think this may be the beginning of a very productive prime for Walker, and that the center of the Cardinals lineup between Masyn Winn, JJ Wetherholt, and Walker will be in great shape for years to come.\n\n## Sign up for Prospects Live\n\nYour one stop shop for Dynasty Fantasy Baseball, MLB Draft, Baseball Card & MiLB Baseball content.
