The topic of what number Darryn Peterson would wear for the Utah Jazz was brought up just minutes after the Kansas guard was selected second overall Tuesday night in the NBA draft. It wasn’t just that there was interest in what number Peterson would wear, but also that there was already a player on the Jazz roster — Kyle Filipowski — wearing No. 22, the same number Peterson donned through high school and college. Peterson noted on draft night that he would need to have a conversation with Filipowski to see if there was anything he could do to get No. 22. Turns out, an agreement was reached between the two Jazzmen...we just aren’t totally clear on what the terms of the deal were. > Darryn Peterson was asked by Sarah Todd if he had to give up anything to Kyle Filipowski to get #22: > > “Yeah, for sure” as he starts laughing > > 😂😂😂 pic.twitter.com/waJ2qpnlvt > > — Art Cummings (@ArtTakesNote) June 27, 2026 “He wanted to keep it,” Peterson admitted on Saturday at his introductory press conference in Salt Lake City. “But he was willing to give me that, so I appreciate him for that, and I told him, like, it’s an honor. I’m thankful that he did it, and that’s his first assist to me.” When pressed on what he had to give up in order to convince Filipowski to part with No. 22, Peterson didn’t say exactly, but laughed and intimated that there were certainly stakes to the agreement. So, Peterson will wear No. 22 for the Jazz and Filipowski will move to wearing No. 2. Blake Hinson, who was on a two-way contract with Utah last season and wore No. 2, will change to No. 11. Peterson will make his debut in the NBA version of his No. 22 jersey at Salt Lake City Summer League on July 4, 6 and 7.
