I have been looking for alternatives to mainstream platforms for months or even years, especially social media ones—not just because I am fed up with certain communities, censorship, or low engagement, but also because I am eager to use platforms that work differently than the most popular ones like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok, with better communities and rules. The fediverse is a network of independent social media servers that can communicate with each other. Instead of one company controlling everything (like Facebook or Twitter), many different organizations or individuals run their own servers. Users on different servers can still follow, message, and interact with each other—similar to how email works across different providers.
