On 19 June 1623, Blaise Pascal was born in France. He built the first mechanical calculator before he was twenty — not because he was trying to change the world, but because he was fed up watching his father do tax calculations by hand. They named a programming language after him. It was the second one I learned. Nine of his calculators still exist. That feels like a lot for something built in the 1600s.
