"textContent": "The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) released its 2026 Annual Report, documenting violations of religious freedom abroad with recommendations to the Trump administration and Congress to counter these persecutions. On March 4th, the USCIRF Commissioners summarized this year’s annual report with civil society religious freedom advocates, congressional staffers, and Congressman Brad Sherman, representing California’s 32nd District, attending the presentation on Capitol Hill. Throughout the presentation, Commissioners emphasized the need for the State Department to release its own report on international religious freedom violations.\n\nThe State Department annual report, and a formal list of designations for violators of international religious freedom, has not been released for the past two years. While the USCIRF applauded President Trump’s decision to re-designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, this two-year absence has undermined U.S. advocacy for the persecuted.\n\nDirectly addressing this situation, USCIRF Vice Chair Asif Mahmood stated “Reporting on religious freedom conditions abroad is more imperative than ever. Government repression and non-state actor violence are on the rise in many places around the world; often devastating targeted religious communities and taking innocent lives. … We urge the State Department to issue its Annual Report on International Religious Freedom and make its designations for countries and entities that violate this fundamental freedom to keep it at the forefront of U.S. foreign policy.”\n\nUSCIRF also noted U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s consistent engagement with religious freedom violations by issuing firm responses in the wake of persecution against religious minorities in Syria, Burma, Nigeria, and China. Commissioners also noted the direct engagement of President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance in affirming U.S. commitments to defend religious freedom globally. President Donald Trump’s direct involvement in designating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) last year was unprecedented and elevated a longstanding issue to greater international attention.\n\nCommenting on the work of the USCIRF in Nigeria, USCIRF Chair Vicky Hartzler said, “The Nigerian Government has for far too long been negligent in seriously and directly tackling the violence and its complex underlying factors.” The lobbying efforts of the Nigerian government to suppress scrutiny of human rights violations has attracted significant criticism of foreign influence in Washington and led to calls for lobbying bans for countries with widespread human rights violations.\n\nVideo of key findings and recommendations from the USCIRF 2026 report can be viewed via the Commission’s YouTube channel below.\n\n**More from IRD** :\n\nWhy Religious Freedom Matters\n\nThe Vanishing Christians of Syria: A Crisis the World Cannot Ignore\n\nMartyrdom and the Resilience of ‘The 21’\n\nThe post U.S. Commissioner Flags ‘Negligent’ Nigeria on Religious Violence appeared first on Juicy Ecumenism.",
