Discover Secret Seasonal Waterfalls Near Townsville
Chasing Waterfalls After the Rain
When the North Queensland rain finally lets up, there is no better time to hit the trails. In the latest episode of the Take A Hike podcast, our host Blair Woodcock sits down with Cherry Judge and Luen Warneke to discuss where to find the region's best secret seasonal waterfalls that come alive after a heavy downpour.
Magnetic Island Hotspots
Magnetic Island is a treasure trove for waterfall chasers. If you are looking for easy access, Endeavour Falls (located at the end of Endeavour Road in Arcadia) is a local favourite. While the upper section remains open for a refreshing dip, the team reminds hikers to exercise caution due to past landslides and shifting boulders.
Looking for something a little different? The crew also discussed:
- Dog Shed Waterhole (Cockle Creek): Found along West Point Road, this spot is perfect for a quick, shallow paddle. It is named for an abandoned, graffiti-covered shed nearby.
- Huntingfield Falls: For the more adventurous, these falls are best accessed by boat or kayak. It is a stunning, Instagram-worthy location that truly shines after heavy rain.
Mainland Gems and Safety Tips
If you prefer to stay on the mainland, Bridal Falls on Hervey's Range is a must-see. It is easily accessible right from the road, making it a popular spot for local photographers looking to capture the perfect shot.
Regardless of where you go, safety is paramount. Our guests shared some vital advice for all hikers:
"All of these natural waterfalls... you should be very careful when you go in, as you are not sure of the water depth or of any previous rock slides. You should not jump into anything unless you have checked it out."
