OpenAI’s Codex can finally control Windows 11 PCs on its own

OpenAI announced via a social media post that Codex desktop’s Computer Use feature is now available on Windows 11 systems. The feature, which enables Codex to control apps on the computer, was previously only available on macOS.

With Computer Use, Codex uses its own virtual mouse and keyboard to navigate the system and perform tasks. It’s particularly useful for developers, as it allows Codex to test programs, update databases, create dashboards, review projects, and troubleshoot workflows—and now it can do it all within a Windows environment.

Windows users, this one’s for you.

Computer use now works on Windows, so Codex can take action on your Windows computer.

Once the feature is activated, the user can refer to the computer or specific apps in their instructions—like @Computer or @Paint—and let the AI perform tasks on its own. For example, here’s one such task as shown on OpenAI’s Computer Use page: “Open @Chrome and verify the checkout page still works after the latest changes.”

In the same announcement, OpenAI also noted that Codex on mobile apps can integrate with Computer Use on desktop, meaning you can “start, review, and steer” tasks on your Windows system directly from your mobile device. In other words, Codex can operate your PC and keep working even while you’re on the go.

For now, Computer Use is available on all Codex plans, including Free and Go tiers. But eventually it will be reserved for the major paid plans, including Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise.
